I was wondering what's your opinion on a city like Mumbai in India building a Coastal freeway (about 30km ~ 18.75mi) to connect the Northern suburbs to the South Mumbai (Government/Business District). Although they plan to build pedestrian promenades and parks along the freeway, I believe that the primary aim of this freeway is to decongest the Arterial roads of the city. Currently, at the busiest of times, it can take upto 2 hrs to travel as little as 25km (15mi). The freeway claims to cut it down to 40mins. But, with a economy like that of Bharat (India), where more and more people will be able to afford cars, will it cause induced demand? PS: They are also expanding the Metro network and upgrading the already existing suburban railway network.

Well, this is probably one of the more unbiased videos on this subject. I think it helps that a lot of the issues that concerned the Soviet government (building affordable housing and walkable neighbourhoods) are issues that are still concerning urban planners today (largely because they haven't been prioritized in capitalist countries). I always found it baffling that cookie cutter suburban homes sprawling to infinity is considered to be somehow individualist and free while these apartments that are close to where people shop and work are somehow dystopian. True, a lot of them are grey and look like shit now but so do most unmaintained buildings that haven't had a new coat of paint applied in decades. While a lot of people stereotype this as one of socialism's weaknesses, I see it as a strength. For their limited level of development (especially early on) they did remarkably well in dealing with a major social problem that still plagues the West today.

As I drove into Gary, Indiana, the once bustling city now appeared eerily quiet and desolate. The streets were empty, with only a few scattered individuals wearing masks scurrying about. The buildings that once stood tall and proud now looked abandoned and neglected. I made my way to a local restaurant that had been recommended to me, hoping to grab a quick bite to eat. As I entered, I was greeted by a weary-looking server who led me to a table in the corner. The restaurant was nearly empty, with only a couple of other patrons scattered throughout the dining room. I ordered my meal and sat back, taking in the somber atmosphere around me. The server returned with my food, her eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and resignation. We exchanged a few words, both of us acknowledging the difficult times we were living in. After finishing my meal, I decided to take a walk around the city to see how it had been affected by the pandemic. The streets were lined with boarded-up storefronts and abandoned buildings, a stark reminder of the economic hardships facing the community. As I wandered through the empty streets, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and despair. The once vibrant city of Gary now seemed like a shadow of its former self, struggling to survive in the midst of a global crisis. I eventually made my way back to my car, feeling a mix of emotions as I drove away from Gary. The visit had been a sobering reminder of the impact that the pandemic had on communities across the country. As I left the city behind, I couldn't help but hope that brighter days were ahead for the people of Gary and all those affected by these challenging times.

Here in Tokyo, about 15% of the population uses a bicycle daily. Considering the city proper has a population of 13 million, the is a lot of cyclists. The entire metro area has some 37 million people. with an similar percentage of cyclists. Japan has almost no dedicated cycling infrastructure, Tokyo simply doesn't have the space to add bike lanes or paths on its already limited road space. What Japan does do is maintain high driver licensing standards and strictly enforced traffic laws to make cycling safer. Japan's per-capita traffic fatality rate is one-sixth that of America.

I grew up in downtown LA bc my mom worked in DTLA. I lived in an 18 story high rise building with all of the lux comforts of a 5 star hotel (pool, hot tub, waterfall, gym, sauna, etc.) We never had to deal with traffic or commuting. When I lived downtown there wasn't anything to do and I was usually the only kid. My commute to school was long bc I went to school on the west side of town. Now downtown has LA Live, Staples Center (I am not calling it that new name), Whole Foods, shopping, other high rise apartment buildings, and restaurants. Even with all of these new developments there's STILL nothing to do! Unless you are downtown for a Lakers game, concert, or other event it's really not a place to stay and hang out. It's so dirty. It's not pedestrian friendly, and there's a lot of homeless. One of the highlights I loved about DTLA was shopping for brand names at super cheap discount prices in the Cooper Building and The Alley.

A better, more apt question: What is a city? To which the answer is the same video, more or less, because most of these (American) suburbs are in fact just part of the city too! Low density, sprawling part of a city, sure, but part of the city all the same. Most of them just have (refused) to urbanize as the city population has increased. But put a way that's both less and more useful: If you live within 15 minutes (by any way) of a Target, you are indeed in a city. Congratulations. Ultimately though, I don't think any of these definitions aren't really useful. A city is a place - and most suburbs of census defined "cities" are part of that place too

The idea that it doesn't impact affordability involves obscuring loss in size and quality (and increasing prices for equally-desirable units) under 'per unit' prices. No one in the real world thinks that if they can buy an apartment for what a house once cost, that affordability stayed the same.
